There is something undeniably special about a wedding set in a place that exists outside of your everyday life.
A destination wedding invites people not only into a celebration, but into an experience—one that unfolds over multiple days, in a setting that feels both intentional and transportive. It shifts the rhythm of a wedding from a single event into something more immersive, more connected, and often, more meaningful.
But with that shift comes a different level of complexity.
Planning a wedding away from home requires more than simply selecting a beautiful location. It calls for a deeper understanding of how people move through unfamiliar environments, how logistics change when you are working across time zones and cultures, and how to create a sense of ease for guests who are navigating travel alongside celebration.
At Sustainable Soirées, destination weddings are approached with the same structure, clarity, and thoughtful guidance that define our work, while accounting for the additional layers these celebrations require.
While our work has largely been based in the Midwest, my experience extends well beyond it.
In addition to planning weddings, I have worked as a travel advisor specializing in luxury honeymoons—collaborating directly with hotel teams and hospitality partners around the world to design highly personalized travel experiences for our clients.
This work has shaped the way I approach destination weddings in a very specific way.
It means understanding not only how a space looks, but how it functions. How guests arrive, how they are welcomed, how they move through a property, and how each touchpoint contributes to the overall experience.
It also means knowing how to communicate with international hotel teams, how to navigate different service standards and expectations, and how to anticipate the kinds of challenges that don’t always appear on a timeline—but are felt by guests if not handled thoughtfully.
This perspective allows us to approach destination weddings not just as events, but as fully integrated experiences.
One of the most meaningful aspects of a destination celebration is the opportunity to design multiple moments that feel connected, intentional, and reflective of the overall setting.
From a welcome gathering that sets the tone for the weekend, to a wedding day that feels seamlessly executed, to a closing brunch that allows for a more relaxed goodbye—each event plays a role in how the experience is remembered.
Our role is to guide that flow.
We consider not only the design of each individual event, but how they relate to one another. How the pace of the weekend unfolds. How guests are cared for throughout. And how to create an environment where everything feels cohesive without ever feeling overproduced.
Destination weddings often involve working with local vendor teams, new venues, and different operational structures.
This requires a level of adaptability, but also a strong foundation in process.
We approach this by carefully vetting partners, building clear lines of communication, and maintaining a consistent planning structure regardless of location. When appropriate, we also collaborate with trusted local professionals to ensure every detail is executed with precision.
Our goal is to create a sense of continuity—so that even in a new setting, the experience feels as composed and considered as any wedding we would plan closer to home.
Because destination weddings carry additional variables, they also require a greater level of on-site presence.
We arrive in advance of the celebration to walk the space, connect with vendor teams, and ensure that every element is aligned before guests begin to arrive. This allows us to move into the wedding weekend with clarity and confidence—so our clients never feel the weight of what is happening behind the scenes.
From the earliest stages of planning through the final moments of the celebration, our role is to hold the complexity of the process and translate it into something that feels seamless, calm, and fully considered.
Destination weddings are not a departure from how we plan—they are an extension of it.
They ask for the same level of intention, the same attention to detail, and the same commitment to creating an experience that feels both elevated and deeply personal.
With the added perspective of travel-based planning and international hospitality collaboration, we are able to approach these celebrations with a broader lens—one that considers not only the event itself, but everything that surrounds it.
And ultimately, that is what makes a destination wedding feel truly complete.
